Search any local service and look at what is actually on the screen. Ads at the top, then a map with three businesses under it, then the normal blue links.
That map box is the local pack, and for a service business it is the most valuable real estate on the page.
Why it beats organic results
- It sits above the organic results, so it is seen first.
- It has a call button. Someone can ring you without ever visiting a website.
- It shows your star rating and review count, which is most of the decision.
- On a phone, which is where local searches happen, it can fill the entire first screen.
Being first in the organic results below it is worth far less than being third in the pack above it.
It is ranked differently
This is the part people miss. The local pack and the organic results are two separate systems with different inputs.
- Organic ranking runs on your website. Content, links, technical health, page speed.
- Local pack ranking runs mostly on your Google Business Profile. Relevance, distance and prominence, with reviews doing a lot of the work.
What actually gets you in
- A specific, correct primary category. The biggest single lever.
- A complete services list.
- More reviews than the three currently above you, arriving steadily rather than all at once.
- Replies on every review.
- A website that matches what the profile says you do.
- Being genuinely near the searcher, which you cannot change but should understand.
How to see your real position
Not from your own phone. Google personalises results by location and history, so you see a flattering version. Use an incognito window, and ideally a tool that lets you set a search location, because the pack changes street by street.
Check from a few points around your service area rather than one. You will usually find you are in the pack close to home and nowhere a few suburbs out, which tells you exactly where the work is.
Rather not do this yourself? Our Google Business Profile management handles the profile, the posts and the reviews every week, for one monthly fee.
