How people search

Panic now, research later.

A burst pipe does not get researched. Someone types four words into a phone, taps one of the first three results, and rings it. If you are fourth you may as well not exist that day.

That urgency splits the work into two very different piles, and they want completely different pages.

  • Emergency: blocked drain, burst pipe, no hot water, leaking toilet. Searched at all hours, decided in seconds.
  • Planned: bathroom renovation, hot water system replacement, gas fitting. Compared over days, often by a second decision maker.
The map pack

Your suburb list is the whole ballgame.

Google decides who appears partly on how far away the searcher is. A plumber ranking beautifully five suburbs over still loses the call. So the work is winning the specific suburbs you want vans in, one at a time, instead of chasing a city-wide position that does not exist.

Judge this on calls from the profile by suburb, not on where you sit when you search your own name.
The website

One page per job, not one page listing every job.

Most plumbing sites have a single Services page that mentions drains, hot water, gas and renovations in one breath. Google has nothing specific to rank for any of them. Splitting that into a real page per job, each answering what it costs and how fast you turn up, is usually the biggest single lift available.

Reviews

Recency beats total.

A plumber on 40 reviews with three from this month outranks one sitting on 200 that stopped two years ago. Emergency customers read the newest ones to check you still answer the phone. Keeping a steady trickle coming in matters more than the number itself.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does SEO work for plumbers?

Yes, and faster than most trades, because the searches are urgent and local. Someone with a burst pipe is not shopping around, so a top-three map position converts hard.

How is this different to Google Ads?

Ads buy the top of the page today and stop the moment you stop paying. SEO is slower to start and keeps working. Most plumbers we talk to want ads on for emergencies and SEO building underneath.

Do I need a page for every suburb?

No, and thin suburb pages can hurt you. A smaller number of real pages about the jobs you do, plus a properly set service area, beats fifty near-identical suburb pages.

How long does it take?

Profile and category fixes can move things quickly. Ranking in competitive suburbs takes longer, and anyone promising a date for it is guessing.
