How to pick the right Google Business Profile category

Your Google Business Profile category moves your ranking more than anything else on the profile. Most businesses picked it once, in a hurry, and never looked again.

Google decides which searches you're eligible to appear in largely from your categories. Get the primary wrong and you can do everything else right and still not show up.

It takes five minutes to check and it's free. It's the highest return per minute of anything in local SEO.

The primary category does most of the work

You get one primary and up to nine secondaries. They are not equal. The primary carries far more weight than all the secondaries combined, and it's the one Google shows under your business name.

So the primary should be the single thing you most want to be called for, not the thing that covers the most ground.

How to find what your competitors use

The three businesses ranking above you in the map pack have told Google what they are. You can just look.

  1. Search your main term in an incognito window and open the top listing.
  2. The category sits right under the business name on the profile.
  3. Do it for all three. If all three share a primary and you've got something different, that's your answer.
  4. Changing your primary to match is legitimate as long as it's genuinely what you do. Picking a category for a service you don't offer is a guideline breach.

Secondary categories

Add every category that describes something you genuinely offer. Each one is another set of searches you become eligible for, and there's no penalty for a full list as long as it's honest.

A plumber might carry gas fitting, drainage service, hot water system supplier and bathroom remodeller alongside the primary. That's four more doorways in.

What you don't do is load up categories for work you'd turn down. Google cross-checks against your website, and a listing claiming services the site never mentions is a suspension risk.

The mistakes that cost you

  • Leaving the default. Plenty of profiles were auto-created with a generic category nobody ever changed.
  • Primary set to your biggest job type instead of your most-searched one. Full bathroom renos might be your best money, but if “blocked drain” is what people type, the primary has to earn you that search.
  • Changing it constantly. Each change is a signal and rankings wobble for a week or two after. Pick well, then leave it alone for a few months.
  • Picking a category your website doesn't back up. Add the service page before you add the category.

How to change it

Search your own business while signed in, hit Edit profile, then Business category. Change the primary, save, and leave everything else alone that day. Give it two to three weeks before you judge the effect, and don't change anything else in the meantime or you won't know what did what.

Questions

Straight answers.

How many Google Business Profile categories should I have?

One primary plus every secondary that genuinely describes something you offer, up to the limit of nine. There is no penalty for a full honest list, but there is a real risk in claiming services you don't provide.

Does changing my Google category hurt my ranking?

There is usually a wobble for a week or two while Google re-evaluates, then it settles. Changing to a more accurate category is almost always worth that short dip. Changing repeatedly is not.

What is the most important Google Business Profile category?

The primary. It carries far more weight than all the secondaries combined and it's the one displayed under your business name. Pick the single search you most want to win.

Can I see what category a competitor uses?

Yes. Open their profile and the category is shown directly under the business name. Checking the three businesses ranking above you is the fastest way to find the right primary.
