How to write a Google Business Profile description that works

Your business profile description is one of the few places on your Google listing where you get to say it in your own words. Most businesses waste it on a paragraph about passion and quality.

The rules

  • Up to 750 characters.
  • No links, no phone numbers in the text, no promotions or prices.
  • Nothing misleading, and nothing that isn't about your business.
  • The first part shows before the "more" link, so that's what most people read.

What goes in the first line

Say what you do and where, in plain words. "Licensed plumber covering Melbourne's eastern suburbs, specialising in hot water and blocked drains." That line does more work than everything after it.

What goes in the rest

  1. Your main services, in the words customers use. Hot water replacement, not "hydraulic solutions".
  2. The areas you cover, named.
  3. One or two real differences: same-day call-outs, how long you've been running, a warranty, family owned.
  4. A plain closing line about how to get in touch.

An example

"Family-owned electricians serving Geelong and the Bellarine since 2012. We handle power faults, switchboard upgrades, safety switches and EV charger installs for homes and small businesses. Every job is done by a licensed electrician, with a certificate of compliance and a written quote before we start. Call or message for same-week bookings."

What not to do

  • Don't stuff it with keywords and suburb lists. It reads like spam to people and looks like spam to Google.
  • Don't copy the same paragraph from your website word for word.
  • Don't mention prices or specials. Those go in posts and offers.

Does the description help ranking?

Not much on its own. Categories, reviews and distance do most of the ranking work. The description is mostly there to convert the person who's already looking at you, and that's worth doing properly.

Rather not do this yourself? Our Google Business Profile management handles the profile, the posts and the reviews every week, for one monthly fee.

Questions

Straight answers.

How long can a Google Business Profile description be?

Up to 750 characters. The opening part shows before the "more" link, so put the most important line first.

Can I put my phone number or website in the description?

No. Links and contact details go in their own fields. Putting them in the description can get it rejected.

Does the description help my Google ranking?

A little at most. It mainly helps people decide to call you once they're already looking at your profile.

Should I list every suburb in my description?

No. Name your main areas in a sentence. Long suburb lists read like spam.
