Test yours in two minutes
- Go to pagespeed.web.dev.
- Paste in your website address.
- Look at the Mobile result, not Desktop.
- Note the Performance score and the Largest Contentful Paint time.
What the numbers mean
| Measure | What it is | Aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint | How long until the main content shows | Under 2.5 seconds |
| Interaction to Next Paint | How fast the page reacts to a tap | Under 200 milliseconds |
| Cumulative Layout Shift | How much the page jumps around while loading | Under 0.1 |
These three are Google's Core Web Vitals. They're part of how Google judges page experience, though great content still matters more than a perfect score.
The four usual causes
- Huge photos. Straight off the phone, often several megabytes each. Resized and compressed, they'd be a tenth of that.
- A heavy page builder theme loading code for features the site doesn't use.
- Widgets loading first: chat, booking, reviews and tracking scripts all fighting before the page appears.
- Slow hosting that takes a second or more just to start responding.
What to fix first
Photos, nearly always. It's the cheapest fix and often the biggest. Then look at what's loading before the page: anything that isn't needed for the first screen can load after it.
Speed and the phone number
The goal isn't a score. It's someone seeing your number and tapping it before they lose patience. Put the number at the top, make it tappable, and make sure it appears before anything heavy finishes loading.
