Small is different

You cannot outspend them, so do not try.

A national brand can win on volume of content and links. A small business wins on being the most obviously right answer in a small area. Those are different games, and running the big one on a small budget loses both.

Where it should go

Two or three things, done properly.

  • The profile, every week. Cheapest lever, fastest to move, and most businesses have never touched it.
  • Reviews, continuously. Nearly free and it lifts every other channel at once.
  • A page per service you sell. Not fifty suburb pages. A handful of real ones.
Where it should not

The line items to refuse.

  • Content calendars about topics your customers never search before buying.
  • Link packages from sites in no way related to your trade.
  • Rank tracking for keywords nobody searches, so the report always looks good.
  • A rebuild of a website that converts fine and just needs pages.
The test

Is it cheaper than the alternative?

Compare it honestly against what else that money could buy: ads, a better van sign, a part-timer answering the phone faster. SEO wins when it costs less per booked job than those, and it usually does after a few months. Before that it is an investment, and anyone pretending otherwise is selling.

One client went from 66 to 80 Google reviews in under a week, off the customer list they already had. Nothing was bought and nothing was faked.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

When it costs less per booked job than your other options, yes. Early on it will not, so judge it on a few months rather than a few weeks.

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

Enough for real monthly work, and never so much that one extra customer a month fails to cover it. Work back from your own job value.

Can I do SEO myself?

Most of it. The hard part is doing it every week for a year while running the business, which is mostly what you are paying someone else for.

How long until it pays for itself?

Profile work can move quickly. The rest builds over months, and any specific date is a guess.
